With all of the canals that run through Venice, each lined with the buildings that contain the history of the city within, there are bound to be a number of these canals that will be connected by bridges. One of the more notable bridges that spans across the canals of Venice is the Ponte dei Sospiri, also known as the “Bridge of Sighs.” This particular bridge, which was built back in the early 17th century, has a particularly poetic story behind it, though there have been historians that claim some of the poetry may have been slightly conjured. The bridge itself connects the prison cells to the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace, and it was named the Ponte dei Sospiri as it was the last sight of Venice that the prisoners would supposedly see before being led off to their demise at the hands of their jailors. Another local Venice legend tells that lovers that exchange a kiss as they pass beneath the Bridge of Sighs by gondola at sunset, will forever remain in love. Many visitors to the city do precisely that, and kiss beneath this bridge to help grab hold of that elusive everlasting love that many lovers seek.
