The Museum and the Gallery of Rome, containing items mainly from the private collection of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, propose to the visitor many Renaissance and Neo-classic sculptures, Bernini's and Della Porta's masterpieces are exposed here together with Canova's famous portrait of Paolina Borghese and paintings of the greatest Italian and foreign artists from the XVII and XVIII century. A masterpiece to be mentioned: the David with the head of Goliath by Caravaggio, where the head of the giant is a self portrait of the artist. Moreover many of the rooms were decorated by famous artists. It is a pity that Napoleon transferred a consistent part of Prince Camillo Borghese's (Pauline's husband) collection to the Louvre once the latter gave up his collection to his brother-in-law. Borghese Gallery in Rome is not the only attraction in the greenery of Villa Borghese: not far away you will find the Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia and the Academy of Modern Art.
