General Info

Bath of Caracalla

The bath of Caracalla is the most important thermal construction of Rome imperial age and it is still the greatest edifice of its kind. Emperor Caracalla had this bath built in 212 BC and their activity came to an end when the aqueducts, that were the main way to supply water the town, were destroyed. Dropped in the X century, people started to come in bath of Caracalla to collect materials to build houses. Roman thermal rituals are well known and Romans loved to spend part of their time enjoyng them. Usually they started with a Turkish bath, then they moved to the "Calidarium" (with very hot water), followed by the "Tepidarium" and the "Frigidarium". Richest customers could afford, at the end, some massages with aromatic oils. The buildings of the bath of Caracalla were completed by a library and a Gymnasium. The ruins of the bath of Caracalla, as they are today, are still imposing and certainly worth to be visited. In summer the Opera theatre has some performances (Opera - Ballet) in the amazing setting of the bath of Caracalla.
