Perugia: Perugia is located near the Tiber River in central Italy. It is the capital of the province of the same name. The city of Perugia is known for being an artistic center in Italy. There were many famous artists that either lived or were born in Perugia, including Pietro Vannucci and Pinturicchio. Your first stop of culture and art in Perugia should be the National Gallery of Umbria. Here you can see many famous paintings and learn about many of the artists of the Renaissance. If you are more interested in the fascinating architecture of the city, you will want to visit the Palazzo Dei Priori. This is essentially the town hall and it comprises of two colleges and the national gallery. Here you will be able to see frescoes and the 14th century interior of the Collegio Della Mercanzia. There are also many churches in Perugia where you can explore the history of Christian religion and see some of the oldest buildings in the city. There is the church and abbey of San Pietro that was built in the 16th century. There is also the basilica of San Domenico that is an important setting for the middle ages when horse fairs and markets would take place near the basilica. When you are inside you will also be able to see Umbrian art and the tomb of Pope Benedict XI. After exploring the many churches in Perugia, you can go to the National Museum of Umbrian Archaeology in order to see one of the longest Etruscan inscriptions. There is also the Etruscan Arch if you are interested in the history and times of Etruscan people. If you want to get out in the open air, you will want to visit Perugia University’s botanical gardens. Perugia is an excellent city to discover and learn what it was like in Italy’s old times. While you are in Perugia, you will be immersed in a lot of culture and history, so take the time to let it all soak in and, if you are a chocolate lover, don’t miss the Eurochocolate week that takes place every year in October!
