Palermo Hotels
PalermoWhen you think of Southern Italy, most people think of Sicily, and Palermo is the capital of that province. Located on the northwestern coast of the island, Palermo has a population of approximately 700,000 people within the city proper. From the Romans to the Vandals to the Goths, then back to the Romans again, Palermo has been under the control of many different cultures through the centuries; this gives the city an almost untraceable historical past, with the Byzantine and Romanesque interweaving with the Baroque and Gothic. You could spend an entire vacation in Palermo and not even scratch the surface of what there is to see. At the historic center of Palermo is the “quattro canti”, or four corners; the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Royal Palace are both within walking distance of the four corners, as are the newly restored Teatro Massimo and the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. In a slightly macabre vein, there are the Capuchin Catacombs, full of thousands of mummified bodies. There are too many “sights” in Palermo to list them here, you’ll just have to come and see for yourself. And we haven’t even begun to talk about the beaches, which are gorgeous and numerous, or the shopping, or the sumptuous dining. This is Italy, and food is all around, from world famous restaurants with staggering views of the city, to gelato and fruit vendors on the street. You shouldn’t come to Palermo if you don’t plan to eat!
