Unità Italiana Square is the square closest to the busy main train station Santa Maria Novella. It is home to an obelisk erected in 1882 to commemorate Italy’s war for independence. This square is home to the church of Santa Maria Novella Rose, which gives the train station its name. While the Unità Italiana Square (Piazza dell’Unità Italiana in italian) is not a large location in the city of Florence, it is central to many of the major sights so be seen when visiting Florence, and the obelisk alone is worth the time to stop at this piazza if you are strolling through the city taking in its culture and views. Many travelers take pictures of themselves and others standing at the base of the striking stone obelisk that towers over the square. It is definitely a worthwhile picture to add to your travel collection. There are also a number of cafes and restaurants nearby, that offer views of the square, and particularly of the obelisk, that allow you to enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal while watching the people as they move in and out of this historic public meeting place.
