San Lorenzo Square, or piazza San Lorenzo, is a square and marketplace located in Florence, Italy. It lies in front of the Basilica de San Lorenzo, one of the city’s largest churches, famous for containing the tombs of the principal members of the famous and influential Medici family. This particular piazza is well known for its lively street market, which sells a little bit of everything, though its speciality is leather goods. This is not the place for the quiet, sedate spending of large sums of money, which is associated with some of the upscale districts in Roma, Milano, or other areas of Firenze. Piazza San Lorenzo and its market is for boisterous bargaining for everything under the sun, from cheese to shoes to bracelets. It is open daily from 9:00 to 7:30, and the vendors and their wares can vary from day to day. The mercato centrale, located in the center of the square, is a two story market devoted almost entirely to food, from fresh produce to smoked meats and cheeses. They are used to travelers, and will pack for shipping if so requested. The rest of the market runs the gamut, from capes and pashmina shawls to suede jackets to kid gloves. You could literally arrive with nothing to wear, and leave the market with a fantastic wardrobe at bargain basement prices.
