Michelangelo Large Square, or Piazzale Michelangelo, is a lovely park/piazza, located in the rolling hillsides just south of Florence, Italy. It’s a bit off the beaten path, and all the more beautiful for it, since it’s not always teeming with crowds. Because of its elevation, it offers beautiful vistas of Florence, with its distinct skyline and the hills on the other side. It is a perfect place for panoramic photography of this Tuscan city. The piazzale also has one of the finest reproductions of Michelangelo’s famous sculpture David, right in the center of the square. There is of course a church nearby, as is the case with all piazzas in Italy. The incredible San Miniato Church, built in the Romanesque style, is a short distance up the hillside. In fact, it is known as San Miniato al Monte because of its perch high atop the city, and it is commonly acknowledged to be the finest example of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany, and one of Europe’s most beautiful churches. A short distance the other way, down the hillside, will bring you to another, smaller piazza, complete with a sidewalk restaurant. If you continue down this path, you come to another small gem, this time in the form of a delightful hidden rose garden. If you are lucky enough to visit this square in the spring, you can also visit the Garden of the Iris, the official flower of the city of Florence.
