Bologna Hotels
BolognaA city which is home to the oldest university in the western world must be a magnificent place, and Bologna, Italy, doesn’t disappoint. It is located in north central Italy, and has much to offer any tourist, no matter what your interests. In spite of sustaining significant damage during WWII, Bologna still has some of the most beautiful buildings from Medieval and Renaissance times. It is one of those cities that is so old that it is meant to be explored on foot--some of the pavement is even made of marble. Most of Bologna’s historical monuments are in the center of the city, within easy walking distance of its two main squares, the Piazza del Nettuno and the Piazza Maggiore. Standing in these squares is like stepping back a few centuries, and the fountains, the leaning towers, and the incredible statue, la Statua di Nettuno, will leave you speechless. The world famous Basilica di San Petronio is the largest church in the city, and would have been the largest in the world, had the Vatican not decreed that no church could be bigger than their own, St. Peter’s. Bologna is overflowing with museums, including the Archaeological Museum, the university museums, and the National Picture Gallery. Of course, being a university town, Bologna really comes to life at night, and there are coffee bars, pubs, al fresco bistros, and nightclubs all over the city. Vespa or by foot are the best ways to find your way around this lovely medieval town. And if you want to shop, well, there is shopping for every budget, from the upscale stores to the many markets, filled with local vegetables and wares. As far as the food, well, this is Italy, what else is there to say? The best thing is to try to lose a little weight before you go, so you can come back “even”. There are eateries everywhere, from expensive, full service establishments with their own sommeliers, to the vendors who sell gelati from their carts. Bologna is the best that Italy has to offer; it is a beautiful city full of smart students and happy tourists!
