Whitehall

Whitehall is the name of a street as well as the unofficial name of a geographical district in Westminster, London. Whitehall Road is the main road connecting Parliament Square with Charing Cross. “Whitehall” is also the name used to refer to governmental buildings and organizations, due to the fact that most governmental bodies have buildings along Whitehall Road. The name “Whitehall” is taken from Whitehall Palace, which used to be in the area, but which was destroyed by fire in the late 1600s. This is the location of the famous statue of Charles I, from which there is a commanding view of most of the Whitehall buildings, as well as Victoria Tower. Whitehall Street, marked at the north by Trafalgar Square, actually becomes Parliament Street at its southern end, due to the fact that Parliament Street, which used to run parallel to Whitehall, was widened to match, and to connect the Parliament buildings with the rest of the governmental buildings. Though the street is barely half a mile long, behind the imposing edifices and beautifully designed architecture lie nearly all of the governmental bodies that rule Great Britain.
