Westminster AbbeyGeneral Info Westminster Abbey is the popular nomenclature of the Collegiate Church of St. Peter at Westminster. It is a church built in the Gothic style, located in central London, west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the coronation church of all British monarchs, and their traditional burial place as well. Technically, it is not a cathedral, but rather a “Royal Peculiar”, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to royalty, Westminster Abbey is the burial site of other aristocrats and British citizens of note, including Geoffrey Chaucer, William Wordsworth, Robert Burns, and T. S. Eliot, though they are buried in what is known as “Poets’ Corner”, in the cloisters, and not in the Abbey itself. Though the Church makes a point of never charging those who wish to enter and worship, they do ask for donations, as Westminster Abbey receives almost no outside funding at all to maintain its buildings and surrounding grounds.
