At the eastern end of The Mall lies Trafalgar Square, and it is often referred to as the “Heart of London.” Built to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar, the Square marks the center of The City, and is a popular tourist spot due to its historical significance, as well as its commanding landmarks. Nelson’s Column, stands tall at the center of Trafalgar Square, and is encircled by fountains, compete with four solid bronze lions statues guarding its four corners. The Square itself has four equestrian statues at each corner, and is fully surrounded by the buildings of The Mall, providing an expansive panoramic view from the center at Nelson’s Column.
Perhaps the most impressive time to view Trafalgar Square is by night, when the statuary and fountains are lit, and the lights of the surrounding city cast an eerie glow over the scene. There are hotels with views of Trafalgar that will truly maze, and if your budget can afford it, then these venues are well worth seeking out. A balcony overlooking the Square is definitely a tough act follow.
