St James' Park

General Info

St. James' Park is the oldest Royal Park in London and it's surrounded by 3 royal palaces: Buckingham Palace, St James' Palace and Westminster (now "Houses of Parliament"). The name derives from the name of a leper hospital that was built here in the XIII century. King Henry VIII bought the area to create a deer park and built the Palace of St James'. Queen Elisabeth I used to held here parties of all kinds, but it was King Charles II who had it redesigned, with avenues of trees planted and lawns, opening the park to the public. Another change (and its final one) is due to John Nash who transformed the canal into a natural-looking lake. Here is Clarence House who was the home of the Queen Mother. The park as we see it today is very much the same as Nash designed it, with its new naturalistic style, the curving lake and the winding paths. The Park is open from 5 a.m. to midnight all year round. Close Access by Tube (District, Circle Line) and also from Charing Cross Station.
