Spitalfields

Spitalfields (which derived its name from “Hospital Fields”, due to the location of a hospital nearby in the late 1100s) is a district in London, quite close to the Whitechapel district. It is primarily known today for the presence of two large markets, the Brick Lane Market and the Old Spitalfields Market. These two markets are open every weekend, and you can literally buy anything you desire, including of course produce and local wares. There is a lively energy in Spitalfields, between the street markets, the vintage shops, the pubs, and lively nightlife. There are museums of all kinds, and houses that have been restored to all of their Victorian glory. There are film festivals, music festivals, and shopping for all budgets and tastes. And speaking of tastes, there are restaurants of every ethnicity in Spitalfields, an eclectic mix of the East and West. Spitalfields is a place best explored on foot, though it is accessible via all forms of London mass transit, including train, Tube, and bus.
