Sotheby’s auction house, located in New Bond Street in London, is the oldest auction house in Great Britain, and one of the oldest in the world. New Bond Street is the trendiest street in Mayfair, acknowledged as the most elegant district in London. Sotheby’s was founded in the early 1700s by Samuel Baker, who opened the house by auctioning the contents of a nobleman’s library. Since then, Sotheby’s has expanded to include just about anything anyone would want to buy, and in the early 2000s, it became the first auction house to hold auctions online. Sotheby’s has expanded to include a New York house as well, and is regarded as the premier name in auctions of fine goods the world over. While most auctions are not open to the general public, some are, and the house should be contacted directly for catalogues and information pertaining to the auctions themselves. In addition to the auction house, there is a café located in the lobby that is open to the public. It is noted for both its luxurious appointments and casual, friendly atmosphere. It is open daily, though reservations are required.
