London Zoo

The Zoological Society of London’s London Zoo is the oldest scientific zoo in the world. It was originally opened in 1828 as a research facility only, but was opened to the public in the late 1840s. Today it houses over 800 species of animals, making it one of the largest zoos in the British Isles. Though is the oldest zoo, the Zoological Society of London (or ZSL for short) operates other, larger zoos which are home to some of the larger species of animals. The London Zoo is located at the northern edge of Regent’s Park in northeastern London. The London Zoo has been home to many “firsts”, including the first public Aquarium, the first children’s zoo, the first insect house, and the first Reptile house, which was featured in the First “Harry Potter” movie. There is also an extensive aviary, and a Butterfly House. Since the ZSL receives no outside funding, there is a fee to enter this zoo. The financial difference is made up through corporate and private sponsors. In addition to numerous gift shops, there are also eateries and food kiosks located within the zoo.
