Jewel TowerGeneral Info The Jewel Tower is a small building that dates back to the Middle Ages located in London, across the street from the Palace of Westminster. It is so named because it was built to house the jewels and treasures of Edward III. The facts that it is constructed of stone, and that it was completely detached, despite being part of the Palace’s defensive walls, are probably what saved the building from destruction during the great fire of 1834, which destroyed most of the rest of the Palace. Small bits of a moat from the period also remain, but the only two parts of the original medieval Royal Palace to survive to this day are Westminster Hall and the Jewel Tower. With its central location, just minutes from the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London (Big Ben), Jewel Tower is a very popular tourist destination, and is open to the public most of the year.
