Holborn

Holborn is a district located in Greater London, which takes its name from Holborn Street, which is the area’s main thoroughfare and runs from St. Giles to the Holborn Viaduct, crossing through the boroughs of Westminster, Camden, and the actual City of London itself along the way. This part of London will be of great interest to Charles Dickens fans, as he not only lived in Holborn for a time, he actually set some of his novels in this colorful neighborhood. He even went so far as to write a description of the area for a “Victorian Guide to London”, which was published in his lifetime. The current site of Gresham College is the location of the original Barnard’s Inn, where the Dickensian character of Pip lived in “Great Expectations”. Holborn was known historically as a locale for entertainment establishments, and indeed was the location of the theater that showed the first full-length feature film in the early 1900s, and some of the historic buildings which survived the Blitz have been restored to their original grace and beauty, and are well worth seeing.
