Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is the largest public park in London, measured at nearly 800 acres.  Arguably the most famous view of London is the panoramic vista of the city from Parliament Hill, which is situated on the southern side of the Heath, as it is popularly known.  The Heath is home to ponds, playgrounds, woodlands, and a training track.  It adjoins Kenwood House, a landmark of historical London, which is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public.  

There are over 25 ponds on Hampstead Heath, some of which are reserved for bathing, and some of which are segregated based on gender.  A large portion of the Heath has been set aside as a wildlife sanctuary and preserve.  This area is popular with naturalists and bird watchers, and even houses a large population of small bats.

No tour guide or bus is needed to enjoy Hampstead Heath; a picnic, good shoes for walking, and perhaps a bathing suit will be all that are needed, though there is now a small fee to use the bathing ponds.
