Greenwich Palace

Greenwich Palace, known in the past as Palace of Placentia, is part of Greenwich Park, a lovely 160-acre park located along the River Thames downstream from Greater London. Greenwich Palace was the birthplace of King Henry VIII, and was his residence of choice during his lifetime. Two of his daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I, were also born there, and Greenwich is known in popular lore as the place where Sir Walter Raleigh put his cloak over a puddle so that Queen Elizabeth I could pass without getting her feet wet. Due to many renovations and remodeling, the Palace is very different from the home enjoyed by Henry VIII. It is now home to the Old Royal Naval College, and of course the Old Royal Observatory, which is the location of origin of the Prime Meridian. It is also home to the National Maritime Museum, which is located atop a hill and offers superb views of The City of London. Admission to Greenwich Palace London and environs is free, and it is open to the public daily.
