Docklands

Docklands is the unofficial name for a neighborhood in eastern London, comprised of docks and wharfs that used to be part of the Port of London.  When the docks were closed for commercial use, developers stepped in, and transformed the London Docklands into a mixture of residential and tourist friendly neighborhoods. Now you can use the light railway to move from central London to Docklands, and on to Greenwich, and it’s easy to while away a day along the River Thames, sitting in pubs, listening to music, shopping at the many markets and boutiques, exploring the Hawksmoor churches, and enjoying the sight of the boats in the lovely marinas. Docklands is also home to the Canary Wharf, the location of England’s three tallest buildings. You can wander historic streets by foot, or even go riding at Great Britain’s largest urban farm.  The riding paths wander along the river, and there are pedestrian footbridges, which offer spectacular views of the docks and of Greater London.  There’s quite a pirate history at Docklands as well, and you can find taverns that were reputed to be frequented by no less than Captain Kidd himself.
