Cabinet War Rooms

Built in 1938, the Cabinet War Rooms were a reinforced center of operations used by Sir Winston Churchill during World War II. Designed to withstand bombardment during the bombing runs over London, they were used during planning sessions and a place to safely decide how the war was to be waged by London’s military elite. The rooms consist of a Map Room, where the planning of the attacks were laid out; the Cabinet Room, which is where Churchill and his cabinet members met to discuss the direction of the war; a communications room, and even Churchill’s bedroom. A more recent addition is the Churchill Museum, which was added to the facility in 2005, and houses displays that detail the personal and political life of Winston Churchill throughout his historic lifespan. The museum is divided into the “chapters” of Churchill’s life, including his younger years as an up and coming politician, through his prominent leadership during WWII, and into his days during the Cold War era. Memorabilia from all periods are prominently displayed, along with full historical significance of every item. This is truly a comprehensive homage to this significant British leader, and is well worth the visit for any person interested in the modern history of London.
