10 and 11 Downing Street

Number 10 Downing Street, and its less famous neighbor, Number 11, are in fact connected inside, so that one need not leave one building to enter the other.  Number 10, of course, is the office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (his official title is First Lord of the Treasury), and his official residence as well.  Numbers 10 and 11 Downing Street are located in the City of Westminster in London.  Number 11 is the official residence of the Second Lord of the Treasury (his official title is Chancellor of the Exchequer).  

Though the people contained inside are vital to world events, the edifices themselves are rather unprepossessing, with black doors simply bearing the numbers “10” and “11” on the front.  There is a popular misconception that the doors are polished wood, but they are in fact, heavy polished steel. The doors, especially of number 10, have been used for photo opportunities by politicians and laymen alike for years.  There are no internal tours of these addresses, but most London site seeing tours include them.
