Strasbourg Hotels
StrasbourgStrasbourg is a city of approximately 700,000 people located in northeastern France, along the German border. The historic center of Strasbourg, the Grand Isle, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. This was the first time in UNESCO’s history that such an honor was conferred on an entire section of a city. Strasbourg Cathedral, which was originally built in the Middle Ages, is still standing today, a magnificent building of spires and stained glass. In fact, this cathedral, along with an astronomical clock and the medieval cityscape, are what make Strasbourg famous the world over. There’s no part of Strasbourg that doesn’t have some historical significance, from the bridges to the “Old Town”, to the many churches and restored buildings, from the old riverboats to the public squares and gardens. There are parks that are simply beautiful spaces filled with plant life and paths for walking, but there are also parks that surround magnificent palaces, many with ponds and other water features. Strasbourg also has a plethora of museums, considering the size of the city, whether your tastes run to sculpture or renaissance paintings. There’s the cathedral of Notre-Dame, the Kammerzell house, the River Ill itself, which offers tours of the city by boat (don’t forget your camera, the views from the boats, especially at night, are unforgettable). And when it’s time to eat, you’ll find the best of traditional Alsatian cooking, along with German specialties (it is on the border, don’t forget), such as sauerkraut, spaetzle, and foie gras. There are taverns, or “winstubs”, as they’re known locally, scattered throughout the city, along with pubs, bistros, coffee bars and restaurants of every kind. You’ll leave Strasbourg with a lifetime’s worth of memories, of the buildings, the people, and the food.
