If you are at all interested in the literary and artistic history of Paris and indeed, of the world, then the Montparnasse Cemetery is worth the visit. The major cemetery on the Left Bank, many of the people buried here are part of Paris’ storied bohemian past. Writers and public intellectuals Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre are interred together near the main entrance. The sculptor Constantin Brancusi is buried here, and you will also find his famous sculpture “Le Baiser” – “The Kiss” in the cemetery.
The playwright Eugène Ionesco, the photographer Man Ray, painter Chaïm Soutine, poet Tristan Tzara, author Susan Sontag and many other famous sculptors, actors, actresses, and cultural activists are buried in the Cimetière du Montparnasse. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet, and Paris Hotels in the 14th arrondissement are still near to the activity on the Left Bank and the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris.
