The charm and the notoriety of this area come from the fame of the people who spiced up the life of this quarter in the years in between the two world wars. It was in those years that this area, that was named after the Mount Parnassus, mountain that the ancient Greeks dedicated to Apollo, god of the sun and arts, that "Montparnasse" gained its fame. Picasso, Hemingway, Cocteau, Giacometti, Matisse and Modigliani were usual clients of the cafés and the cabarets of this quarter. This quarter of Paris still holds its charm, thanks also to the "Cimetiére du Montparnasse" that harbours the remains of Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, Guy de Maupassant and Samuel Becket. Do not miss, while stopping by the cafés of this area, to visit the Catacombs.
