Gare de Lyon is a “terminus” railway station located in Paris which, like many of the others, names an important destination of train lines which originate there, rather than a landmark which is close in proximity to the station itself. It it the primary origin of most rail service to the southern part of France. In addition to the grand old station, there is metro service through a modern station, which was built underneath the original Gare de Lyon. The Lyon Train Station was originally built for the World Expo of 1900, and was therefore done on a lavish scale. It is considered to be the classic embodiment of the architectural style of the time. One of its most famous features is the clock tower that sits atop one corner of the station, built in a style similar to London’s famous Tower Clock. Gare de Lyon is also home to the famous Le Train Bleu restaurant, immortalized in numerous motion pictures. Whether you’re traveling anywhere or not, Gare de Lyon is not to be missed.
