Jardin du LuxembourgGeneral Info The Jardin du Luxembourg is an oasis of peace and calmness; it represents a dream for many inhabitants of Paris. Its ancient passageways, the bookstores and the gardens, cosy and magnificent at the same time grant to this quarter of Paris a timeless appeal. The homely and relaxed feeling of the gardens of the "Luxembourg" attracted writers such as Paul Verlaine and André Gide, who loved to stroll in the shadows of the tree covered promenades. Now the promenades are the destination of the students of the "grandes éscoles" and of the nearby "lycées", and during summertime elder people gather beneath the chestnut trees to play chess or lawn bowling, while the boldest sunbath on the terraces that run along the octagonal lake.
