The Gare Saint-Lazare is one of the six terminus style stations located in Paris. It is one of the busiest train stations in Europe, second only to the famous Gare Du Nord in foot traffic. Close to half a million people a day walk through its doors. The station first opened in the mid 1800s, though it has gone through extensive extensions, additions, and renovations since that time. It is a graceful structure, with classic lines, and has been immortalized in a number of works of art. Manet who actually lived quite near the station, painted it many times, and a few of those works are on display today in some of the world’s most renowned museums and galleries. Manet, also, lived for a time near the station, and painted a dozen different interpretations of it. In fact, due to its impressive edifices and facade, Gare Saint-Lazare is perhaps the most photographed and painted terminus in all of Paris.
