Gare de l’Est (literally in English East Station) is one of Paris’ large “terminal” style stations. It is located in the tenth arrondissement, along the boulevard de Strasbourg. It is ranked among the largest and oldest stations in Europe. It was originally opened around 1850 with the name Platform Strasbourg. The west side of the station features a statue by famed sculptor Philippe Lemare which represents the city of Strasbourg, while the east side has a statue representing Verdun; both Verdun and Strasbourg are major cities along the lines serviced by the station. The Gare de l’Est was also the historic point of origin for the famed Orient Express, which terminated in Istanbul. It earned its name by being a strategic mustering point for troops, which were mobilized for WWI. This event is illustrated in a mural sized painting by Herter that is located in the main-line hall of the station. Gare de l’Est is a stunning piece of architecture, which has been remodeled to meet the needs of the present while protecting the grace and grandeur of the past.
