Bastille (12) General Info

When it comes to historic places in Paris, the Place de la Bastille in the 12th Arrondissement de Reuilly is almost unrivalled. Once the site of the famous Bastille prison, where in 1789 French crowds stormed the walls, freed the prisoners and started the French Revolution. The event is celebrated every year on July 14th, the Fete Nationale is the national holiday of France. A Paris hotel near the Bastille puts you close to that history and all the other charms of the 12th Arrondissement. This district is the south western corner of the city, on the Right Bank of the River Seine, and is still close to the heart of the city. Today, the prison walls are gone, and you'll find the site of the Place de la Bastille, a beautiful city square, and the Opera Bastille, the second largest opera house in Paris. Behind the long disappeared walls of the city, the old moat has been transformed into a charming marina, crammed with boats which travel up and down the nearby Canal St. Martin.
