Nice is a city in Southern France along the Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the prime locations of the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur). As the fifth largest city in France, the first known settlements in the area are thought to date back nearly 400,000 years. Tourists to Nice might find the city more reasonably priced than the more expensive Cannes. There are some accommodations that are more upscale but for the most part Nice is a middle-class area. There are several four and five star hotels in Nice but you will also find some hotels that are less expensive. Most of the hotels in Nice have an astonishing view of the Mediterranean Sea. Because of the proximity to the sea a good portion of the year is windy. In the summer months be prepared for larger tourist crowds and if you plan to visit you will want to register for your Nice hotel earlier rather than later.
Nice: During the 19th century Victorians and Czarists turned Nice, France, into a tourist haven, but today it is more middle-class than its more luxurious neighbor, Cannes. Nice is by far the least expensive of the cities in the French Riviera and is a great bargain for tourists. In 1822 the local orange crops failed badly and as a result the workers of the city built a wide-boulevard along the beach called the Promenade des Anglais. Along this boulevard you will find rows and rows of grand café’s. Many of these café’s are in good condition but some are in need or repair. This is also the main area for museums and hotels. In the eastern part of the city, the promenade turns in to the quai des Etats-Unis. The quai des Etats-Unis is borderd by some of the cities best restaurants. Towards the north end of Le Château de Nice is the most famous old graveyard of Nice, Cimiez. Tourists visit the cemetery primarily because of its intricately sculpted monuments — each making its own lasting art statement. You will find everything from ancient Roman ruins to more recent leftovers from the Victorian era. Nice is a city you will not want to miss.
