MontpellierMontpellier is a small city (population approximately 250,000) located on the southern coast of France, along the Mediterranean Sea. It is a city that dates back to medieval times, and its history can be traced through its architecture, from the Middle Ages, through the Reformation, and into modern times. It has a lovely Old City, which has been preserved as it stood during Roman times, and it is for the most part a Pedestrian Paradise (no cars allowed), so you can relax and stroll among the antiques shops and pubs, and perhaps stop for a beer or a sandwich. The Place de la Comedie (named for a theatre which burned down) is now a major market place, where just about anything, including fresh fruits and vegetables, can be bought. At its center is the fountain de trois Graces, and there are al fresco coffee bars where you can just relax and watch the world go by. Of course, being on the coast, Montpellier is home to spectacular beaches. They can become crowded during the summer months, but it’s always possible to go down a ways and explore a secluded cave or two. For the gardeners among you, there is the Jardin des Plantes, created in the sixteenth century, an outstanding Botanical Garden with over 2,000 different species of plants and flowers. Montpellier is a city full of young people, so there is nightlife to spare, with live music sometimes going on for hours into the night. If you want to get wet, but don’t like the ocean, there’s the Piscine Olympique d’Antigone, a water park that features two pools, spas, and slides, fun for the whole family. Of course, since this is France, you will find only the best to eat, whether it is at an inexpensive diner on a side street, or a full service restaurant with views of the lovely beaches.
