LyonLyon is a city located in the eastern central portion of France, with a population of approximately 1,700,000 people. It is a bustling metropolis, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is picturesquely situated along the Rhone River, and has many wonderful views, both of the river, and of the bridges that span it. It is considered by many to be the gastronomical center of France; certainly the Lyonnais themselves think that this is so! Lyon is a city full of beautiful buildings, the most famous of which include the Saint-Jean Cathedral and the Notre-Dame de Fourviere, a spectacular basilica that overlooks the entire city. Its spires are like something out of a medieval romance, truly. In addition there are the Sainte Marie De La Tourette monastery, the Place Bellecour, and the Roman ruins on the Fourviere hill. Due in part to the fact that Lyon is located between two of France’s premiere wine growing regions, it has developed a reputation pertaining to all things gastronomical, and it is famous for its local dishes and snacks. You won’t lack for something to eat when you visit Lyon. The local restaurants are called “bouchon” bistros, and whether you choose to frequent one of them, or one of the Michelin guide’s three star establishments, you will have a meal to remember. Lyon offers tours of its city in any manner of your choosing; you can choose to rent a bicycle, buy a map for a walking tour, or even hire a boat for a tour from the Rhone and Saone rivers. Of course Lyon is full of museums, including the world-renowned Musee des Beaux-Arts, the Museum of the Resistance, and the Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilization. If you have energy to spare for a little nightlife, then the Croix Rousse is for you. This district throbs all night long with music from myriad clubs, pubs, and quiet side streets with al fresco coffee bars from which to enjoy the evening. Lyon is that perfect mixture of the historic and the modern.
