Valencia Hotels
Valencia is a city of approximately 800,000 people located on the southeast coast of Spain. It is a beautiful city, full of towering Moorish castles, fortresses along the coast, and some of the most modern buildings in Spain, buildings that have won countless awards for their architecture. Like most European cities, Valencia has an “Old City”, where the streets are narrow, paved with stones, and steeped in history and mystery. There are buildings dating back to Arabic and Roman times, and the cathedral, which was built during the Middle Ages. Next to the cathedral is the Basilica of the Virgin, built in the Gothic style, and considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe. At the other end of the historical and architectural spectrum, there is the Hemispheric at the Ciudad de las Arts y las Ciencias, designed by Santiago Calatrava, which looks like a spacecraft that has splashed down in the restored riverbed of the River Turia. There is an open air oceanographic park, an aquarium, a science museum, a planetarium, and an Opera house, all housed within this one “city of Arts and Sciences”. And of course Valencia is on the coast, which means beautiful, white sand beaches and blue, blue water...It’s a hard choice to decide whether to explore the city, with its beautiful public gardens and squares, most with lovely fountains and sculpture, or hit the beach for the day. And let’s not forget the shopping and the food! Valencia is famous for its paella, a rice dish made in a special two handled pan, and you can get it at a real restaurant, complete with wine list and four course meal, or you can buy it from a vendor in the street who makes it out in the open air--it’s a tasty delight either way. As for the shopping, there’s the modern, “let’s spend lots of money” kind in the newer part of town, or the “let’s explore the antiques and vintage clothing stores” type in the old city. And when the sun goes down, the music turns up, as beach front bars and bistros in the old city turn into night clubs, where the music rages until dawn. You’ll leave Valencia tired but happy.
