Seville

Seville is a country located in southwestern Spain, along the Rio Guadalquivir. It has a population of about 700,000 within the city proper, so it’s one of those “not too big, not too small” kinds of places. It is a city steeped in history, which has had countless wars waged over it, a city of unrivaled beauty and atmosphere. In Seville, medieval castles and palm trees stand shoulder to shoulder, overlooking the vista of the city and the river. The main cathedral itself dates from the early 1400s, and it is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in all of Europe. There is also the Torre del Oro, built as a watchtower to guard against invaders who might come upriver in stealth. In addition to these beautiful buildings, Seville is filled with lovely parks and public gardens, such as the Alcazar Gardens, and the Gardens of Murillo, and the incredible Parque Maria Luisa, a spacious park located in the city’s center. In addition, there are museums, like the world renowned Museo de Bellas Artes, famous the world over for the frescoes on its ceiling, and art galleries, which are located throughout the city. For those of you who want to take in a bullfight, the Plaza de Toros is the place to go, though it is only open from April through September. For “off the beaten path” shopping, there is the Calle de la Feria, a narrow street filled with an eclectic mixture of small boutiques and off beat stores. Seville has both the large, department store style of shopping, as well as the smaller, artisan/vendor type of shops; and yes, most do still close during the hottest part of the day for siesta. And of course Seville is steeped in the culture of Catholicism, and has many religious festivals throughout the year, festivals that are famous for their beautiful and sometimes somber parades. And if nightlife is what you’re looking for, Seville has that too, from standard bars and clubs to places that specialize in Flamenco dancing. Seville is the heart of southern Spain.
