The Puerta de Alcalà is a monument that stands in the Plaza de la Independencia. This plaza is close the center of the city of Madrid and is only a short walk from the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro. The monument was built by the order of King Carlos II. The monumental gate was to serve as one of the entry points into the city wall. The gate was a pas through to get on a road that leads to Alcala. The Puerta de Alcalà replaced and older gate that stood nearby. King Carlos III inaugurated the gate in 1778. There are a few notable events that have happened at this gate. First, in 1823 the gate was showered by cannon shrapnel. If you look closely you can still see the marks that it left on the gate. This gate also has attracted many famous people to pass through the gate, including the Count of Villahermosa. Hotels in Puerta de Alcalà are very close to the center of Madrid. This is the perfect spot for vacationers because they can be close to all lof the major tourist attractions and travel by foot very easily.
