The Plaza de Colon is a plaza that is dedicated to the explorer Christopher Columbus. It is located in the district of Alonso Martinez in Madrid. It was originally named St. James Square, but was changed to honor Christopher Columbus in 1893. A statue in his honor was built and completed in 1885. This monument is located on the Paseo de la Castellana side of the square. The monument depicts Columbus pointing west, but it really points to the east towards the sea. There is also a second monument in the Plaza de Colon that is a combination of macro-sculpture by Joaquin Vaquero Turcios. It is located on the Calle Serrano side of the plaza.
