The Museo Cerralbo is a collection of private paintings, ceramics, and other artworks collected by the Marquis of Cerralbo Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa in the 17th century. As an active member of the Carlist party, he entailed both his collections and mansion to the Spanish state upon his death. Not only does this museum house the collected works of the Cerralbo family, but it also present a well preserved picture of the daily life of an aristocratic family living in Madrid. From the very beginning the mansion that currently houses the museum was built to not only be a residence, but a museum to house the collected works of Cerralbo. The building was constructed between 1883 and 1893. The space is divided between a mezzanine floor for the family’s everyday use and a main floor that was used for receiving guests. The museums features paintings, sculptures, ceramics, glassware, furniture, coins, medals, prints, clocks, weapons, and other works of art and artifacts that the Cerralbo family has collected throughout the travels in Spain and the rest of Europe.
