The original purpose for Kilometro Cero was to be an access to Madrid when it was surrounded by exterior walls in the twelfth century. The name Kilometro Cero (meaning “door of the sun”) came from the picture of the sun that adorned the entrance, and the location of the door being pointed towards the east. It stood as a symbol of Madrid for many years.
