Kilometro Cero General Info

Kilometro Cero is one of the more well known places in Madrid. It is known for the being a traditional place where the people of Madrid mark the coming of the New Year. This event begun being televised in 1962 and have been on public television every year since. The original purpose for Kilometro Cero was to be an access to Madrid when it was surrounded by exterior walls in the twelfth century. The name Kilometro Cero (meaning “door of the sun”) came from the picture of the sun that adorned the entrance, and the location of the door being pointed towards the east. It stood as a symbol of Madrid for many years.


There are many churches, government buildings, and other historical structures that surround the area of Kilometro Cero. The most recent elements have been added as recently as 2004 to commemorate the attacks in March of 2004. These can be accessed by foot or by a short ride on the metro.
