El Rastro

General Info

Several changes have occurred since its birth in the XV century, but it is certainly a most pleasant experience. Do not forget to arrive as early as possible on Sunday morning (El Rastro opens at dawn and closes around 2 pm) and beware of pickpockets as in any place or market packed with people. Just take in the atmosphere because bargaining is not as it used to be. But at the main northern entrance (Plaza de Cascorro) look for almost everything, from flowers to clothing, from souvenirs to jewellery, tapestries, etc… while if you look for antiques you'll have to explore the southern area around Ribera de Curtidores and the streets leading west. If you should get tired, take a rest at a local bar drinking a "caña" (a glass of beer) and eating fried calamari or sardines.
