The Chueca area just north of the Gran Vía includes the narrow streets of Barquillo, San Lucas, Hortaleza, and Infantas. There is a big concentration of bars and restaurants in all different price ranges that will appeal to all nationalities. The area is centered on the Plaza de Chueca and the Chueco metro station, and it’s known as the main gay area of Madrid. Less than ten years ago, male prostitution and drugs were rampant in the area. Since then, Madrid’s growing and affluent gay population has turned Chueca into one of the trendiest areas in Madrid. During the day, the numerous boutiques and shops of designers are the hub of activity, along with the chic cafes. Along with the Madrid Hotels in Chueca, there are also businesses like travel agencies, video stores, attorneys mixed in with the bars, clubs, and restaurants. There are numerous clubs that cater to the gay and lesbian clientele, including The Planet, which is named after a bar in the lesbian show The L Word.
