The Atocha Railway Station is the largest railway station in Madrid, Spain. It primarily serves commuter trains, intercity trains, and the regional trains from the south, such as from Seville and Barcelona. Atocha Railway Station was actually Madrid’s very first railway station. It was inaugurated in 1851 and destroyed by a fire just a few years later in 1892. The replacement railway was built with the renewal style of Alberto de Palacio Elissagne, with engineer Henry Saint James. Now that there is a new building that serves as the railway terminal, the old Atocha Railway Station has been converted to a concourse that contains may shops, cafes, nightclubs, and a 4000 meter covered tropical garden. Not only is the concourse a great place to find some dining and entertainment options, but the Reina Sofia Museum is just a few blocks away from the Atocha Railway Station. Since the attacks that happened in 2004 at the station, there has been a virtual shrine erected that was dedicated to the station by the Minister of Transport. Visitors can leave a hand silhouette and a message on special purpose consoles. Hotels near Atocha Railway Station are a conveniently located set of accommodations because not only is the train station nearby, but there are also many art galleries and museums within walking distance.
