Plaça de Sant Just

The Plaça Sant Just is a square located in the heart of the Barri Gotic, or Old Barcelona. It is the location of one of Barcelona’s oldest Christian churches, the Esglesia de Sant Just, which dates from the fourth century. There is also a fountain, built in the Gothic style in the late thirteen hundreds by Joan Fiveller, one of Barcelona’s councilmen of the time. The story goes that Fiveller discovered a spring in the hills outside the city, and was so enamored of the taste of the water that he built the fountain and had the water piped straight to it. The fountain itself is a work of art which bears the image of the count-kings’ coat of arms, a pair of falcons, and of course the image of St. Just. There is also an entry arch to a courtyard off the square which leads to a historically preserved home of a prominent family in Barcelona at the time. The Plaça Sant Just, like most destinations in the Old City, are accessible by mass transit and by foot, as almost no vehicles are allowed in this section of Barcelona.
