Plaça de Sant Jaume

Plaça de Sant Jaume is a large square in Barcelona, which dates back to the Roman period. Most of the important governmental buildings were found in this square, including the Palace of the Generalitat and City Hall. This square has tremendous significance to Catalan history, and has been the site of some of its most significant events. Catalan declared itself to be an independent state in this very square in nineteen thirty-one. Now its importance is mainly ceremonial, and as a tourist destination. Every Sunday, Barcelona natives come to this square to dance the Sardana, which is the national dance of Catalonia. Placa de Sant Jaume is in the heart of Old Barcelona, and is best explored on foot, though it is mass transit accessible. Nearby are shops, restaurants, cafes, and galleries beyond counting, and an outing begun in this ancient square could lead anywhere. In spite of its historical significance, Plaça de Sant Jaume is not as commercial as some of the other squares, and is therefore quieter, with a more intimate appeal.
