Fundacio Joan Miro

This Museum, entitled to one of the most famous citizens of Barcelona, opened officially in 1975. Built over the hill of Montjüic, the Joan Mirò's Foundation, housed in an open space building projected by the architect J. Louis Sert, who was a close friend of Mirò's, was born in 1968 by an idea of the artist himself. He wanted to grant a refuge to modern art and, at the same time, to be sure that is own art would have its own "showcase". Nowadays the Foundation hosts almost 10.000 works of art of this Catalan genius, who decided to abandon conventional art "killing it, murdering it or raping it" as he used to say. Mirò's works are displayed in the patios and on the terraces of the building designed by Sert. The exhibition spans throughout the whole career of the artist, starting from his first works and ending with the huge paintings that marked the last stages of his career. According to the artists intentions, the in the hall called "Espai 13", the foundation hosts works of art of young artists. It also organizes expositions in various Museums of the world to carry on Miro's legacy.
