Literally "Expansion", this area between the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century, connected the Ciutat Vella at what at that time were a bunch of villages on the outskirts of the city of Barcelona. The streets of the Eixample where planned with a rational plan, following the pioneer visions of Ildefons Cerdà, keeping in mind the ever growing need for the urban traffics. The best part of the architecture of this area is affected by the influence of Modernism and here you can admire some works of the famous Antoni Gaudì, for example La Pedrera, Casa Batllò and the famous Sagrada Familia.
