Hanover: Hanover is a city located in north central Germany, along the River Leine, which has a population of approximately 500,000 people. For you beer lovers, it is home to the second largest Oktoberfest in the world, so if beer is your thing, then you definitely need to be in Hanover in October! But this city isn’t just about the beer. Hanover is home to some of the most beautiful gardens in Germany, if not Europe, such as the Berggarten, which contains the Canary House, the Cactus House, and the Orchid House, which is home to the world’s largest collection of orchids, and free flying butterflies and birds. Nearby is the Sea Life Center of Hanover, which is the first tropical aquarium in Germany. The Hanover Zoo is renowned the world over, and is considered by most to be the finest zoo in Europe; it has even won awards to this effect. And of course Hanover has its “Old Town”, at the center of which is the Market Hall and the Old Town Church. As is usual in most European cities, it is possible to see both the old and the new, and Hanover is no exception. The Old Town Hall is as its name suggests, a historical building built hundreds of years ago, and with no pretensions to glory. Juxtaposed with this is the New Town Hall, build in the early 1900s, a spectacular example of eclectic styles, a castle like building, complete with domes, spires, and a beautiful garden outside. In addition, there is the Hanover Historical Museum, the Hanover Opera House, the Kestner Museum, and many “common” parks and gardens, full of beautiful flora and statuary. There are river cruises from which to view the city, which are especially beautiful at night, and river tours that are photo ops just waiting to happen. The Market Hall, mentioned above, is the best place to get a meal, from seated restaurants to bistros that serve simple stews, and the best shopping is around Market Hall, too, so all is conveniently close!
