Dresden: If you ask someone to show you pictures of their recent trip to Dresden, Germany, you might be surprised to see photographs of people white water rafting, biking and hiking in green forests, or posing in front of an ultra modern theatre. Yet this is Dresden today. It is a city of approximately 500,000 people, located on the banks of the historic Elbe River, a scant few hours’ drive from the border it shares with the Czech Republic. Of course, Dresden is unfortunately famous for the incredible attack it sustained during WWII, a bombing raid that created a firestorm that in turn wiped out nearly the entire city center. However, with the exception of a few buildings, which have remained as they were as a monument to those who perished, Dresden has been rebuilt into one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. There are many museums, some dedicated to the war, some to art and sculpture. The royal buildings in Dresden are a spectacular mixture of Classicist, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, and the Zwinger Palace is home not only to the royal art collections, but a world famous moat and gate. Dresden is very proud of its “green” status; some statistics show that over 60% of Dresden is covered with greenery or plant life of some sort. When you’re ready to shop and eat, you can begin with the Altmarktgalerie, a huge “mall” type shopping area, and continue down the many streets that lead away from the Altmarkt Square. Hopefully you’ll end up at the river, where there are many riverside beer gardens and wine bars. You can while away the afternoon trying the various locally brewed beers and wines grown in the nearby valleys. Before you know it, evening will be upon you, and it will be time to hit the nightclubs, which come in all varieties, from jazz, to disco, to traditional “Oktoberfest” style beer pubs.
