Düsseldorf: Dusseldorf is a large city located along the western border of Germany, on the Rhine River. It has a large population, with approximately ten million people in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area. There is a lot to do in Dusseldorf, whether it is a walking tour of beautiful old buildings, a boat cruise on the River Rhine, or a beer pub tour of the various establishments, which serve the best German ales and beers. Dusseldorf has an Altstadt, or old city, which is paved with the original cobblestones, and contains some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Germany. There is the so-called “Brewery Path”, where one can walk from one brewery to another and sample the various wares. Or, if walking isn’t your thing, there are carriage tours, where one can sit back and enjoy the city the old fashioned way, with the pleasant sound of the horses’ hooves for company. For a more active approach, bicycles can be rented for a self-guided tour through this bicycle friendly city. Of course, no vacation is complete without shopping, and Dusseldorf has its famous Konigsallee (roughly translated as “King’s Road”), which has the most exclusive upscale shopping to be found in the city. This one street is home to clothing stores, art galleries, antiques shops, perfume shops, and exquisite porcelain shops. There are numerous restaurants there as well, which become al fresco sidewalk cafes in warm weather. The Altstadt offers more affordable shopping, with an eclectic mixture of vintage clothing shops and boutiques, art galleries and restaurants of all kinds. And did you know that more than 7,000 Japanese people live in Dusseldorf? If you want a little taste of Japan while you’re in Dusseldorf, you can visit Little Tokyo, and get your sushi on!
